BEM stands for Betriebliches Eingliederungsmanagement (occupational integration management). It must be offered by the employer to employees who have been unable to work for at least 42 days due to illness within a 12 month period. The employer offers this structured procedure with the aim of maintaining the employee's job and adapting it to his/her personal needs.
The procedure is roughly as follows:
If it has been established that an employee has been on sick leave for at least 6 weeks (42 calendar days) within the course of a year (12 months), the employee will receive a letter inviting him or her to participate voluntarily in a BEM procedure.
If the employee agrees to the BEM procedure, they are given the opportunity to describe their situation. The person decides for him/herself how much he/she wants to disclose about his/her illness or the problems in the workplace. The measures and goals to be achieved through the BEM are also discussed.
